How to Cancel Your Virgin Active Membership (Fees, Notice Periods)
Canceling your Virgin Active membership is simple if you know the right steps. Missing the deadline or using the wrong method can cost you extra money.
- UK members must give notice at least 3 days before their next direct debit. South Africa members must cancel by the 20th of their final month.
- A 40% cancellation fee applies if you cancel mid-contract in South Africa. No fee after your 52 week commitment period ends.
- If you are locked into a contract, freezing for around R50 a month is cheaper than paying the cancellation fee.
Cancel Online, By Phone, Or In-Club
You have three ways to cancel your Virgin Active membership.
Online
- Log into your account with your email and password
- Go to Account Settings or Membership
- Select Cancel Membership or Leave Virgin Active
- Confirm your cancellation date making sure it meets your region’s notice period
- Review your final billing date and any fees
- Submit and save your confirmation email right away
If online cancellation is not available in your account use phone or in club instead.
By Phone
South Africa members call 0860 200 911. UK members contact the Virgin Active customer services team. Phone calls take longer to process than online, but your request gets documented.
In Club
Visit your local reception desk. This is the slowest option and includes an admin fee. Ask staff for written confirmation of your cancellation date.

Notice Period & Deadline
Missing your deadline means your membership auto-renews and you get charged for another month.
UK Members should give notice at least 3 days before your next direct debit date. The cutoff is close of business on Sunday. For example, if your next charge is Wednesday June 10 you must cancel by Sunday June 7.
South Africa Members should cancel by the 20th of your final membership month. For example, if your membership ends June 30 you must cancel by June 20.
After your 52 week commitment period your membership auto-renews in 2 week cycles. Set a phone reminder one week before your deadline to stay on track.
Cancellation Fees & Costs
In South Africa, if you cancel before your 52-week commitment period ends you pay 40% of your monthly rate.
Once your commitment period ends cancellation is completely free. Waiting a few extra weeks can save you a lot of money.
➤ Phone and in club cancellations include an extra admin fee. Online cancellation avoids this, so it is the cheapest option.
Your last charge is processed on your next billing date after cancellation. Your gym access ends that same day.
Freeze Your Membership Instead Of Cancelling
If you are locked into a contract, freezing is much cheaper than paying the 40% cancellation fee. Virgin Active South Africa lets you freeze for around R50 a month until your 52-week commitment period ends. After that you can cancel for free.
Cost Example: R1,200 a month membership with 6 months left. Freezing costs R300 total. Canceling early costs R480 in fees plus you lose access anyway.
| Factor | Freeze | Cancel |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | ~R50 | 40% fee if mid-contract |
| Gym access | No access | Ends on final billing date |
| Can reverse | Yes | No, must rejoin as new member |
| Best for | Temporary pause | Permanent exit |
Policy Differences in UK vs. South Africa
Virgin Active’s cancellation policies differ significantly between regions. Understanding which rules apply to you prevents costly mistakes.
| Policy | UK | South Africa |
|---|---|---|
| Notice period | 3 days before next direct debit | By 20th of final month |
| Cancellation fee | Contact support to verify | 40% mid-contract, free after 52 weeks |
| Freeze option | Contact support to confirm | R50 a month |
| Auto-renewal | 2 week cycles after 52 weeks | 2 week cycles after 52 weeks |
| Phone contact | Customer services team | 0860 200 911 |
The biggest difference is the notice period. UK members count back 3 days from their billing date while South Africa members must cancel by the 20th of their final month.
If you are relocating internationally contact Virgin Active directly to find out if your membership transfers or needs to be canceled and restarted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I get a refund for unused days?
Refund eligibility depends on your region and contract terms. Contact Virgin Active directly before cancelling to confirm if you’ll receive a pro-rata refund for unused membership days. Wallet balances and Tier Points disposition also varies by region, clarify this before you cancel.
Can I Cancel If I Am Unhappy With the Service?
General dissatisfaction is not a valid reason for early cancellation during your commitment period. You would still need to pay the 40% fee if you are mid-contract. Wait until your 52 week period ends to cancel for free.
Can I Cancel If I Move to a City Without a Virgin Active Club?
Yes. Relocating to an area without a nearby Virgin Active is a valid reason for early cancellation. Contact support with proof of your new address to apply for an exemption.
