How to Cancel David Lloyd Membership Complete 2026 Guide

How to Cancel David Lloyd Membership Online

Canceling your David Lloyd membership is not as simple as stopping your Direct Debit. You must submit a written notice or you will keep getting charged and could face debt collection.

  • Written notice is mandatory. Stopping your Direct Debit alone does not cancel your membership.
  • The standard notice period is 3 months. Miss the deadline and your cancellation rolls to the next cycle.
  • Save proof of submission right away. This protects you if David Lloyd claims they never received your notice.

Submit Written Cancellation Notice

David Lloyd requires written notice to cancel. Phone calls alone do not count. You have three ways to submit.

Ways to Submit

Email: Send to [email protected] or your location specific email
Registered Post: Gives you a tracking number as proof of delivery
In Person: Ask staff to note the date, time, and their name on your receipt and photograph it right away

3-Month Notice Period

After the 14 day cooling off period you must give 3 months written notice to cancel. So if you submit on June 3 your membership ends September 3 and your last charge is on that date.

14 Day Cooling Off

New members can cancel within 14 days of signing up with no notice period or penalties. After 14 days the standard 3 month notice applies.

If You Miss the Deadline

Missing your deadline extends your membership by another 3 months. For example if your deadline is June 30 and you submit on July 1 your new end date becomes October 1 and you get charged for July, August, and September.

Set a phone reminder 6 weeks before your desired end date to avoid this.

Direct Debit Cancellation

Stopping your Direct Debit does not cancel your membership. Your membership stays active and you remain liable for charges and possible debt collection.

You need to do two separate things:

  1. Submit written cancellation notice to David Lloyd
  2. Cancel your Direct Debit in your banking app only after your cancellation is confirmed

Never stop your Direct Debit before formally canceling. David Lloyd will chase outstanding balances, and it can damage your credit score.

Stopped Your Direct Debit Early

Submit written cancellation notice right away. Then contact the Membership Department to check your cancellation status and clarify any outstanding balance.

Only cancel your Direct Debit authorization after that is sorted. Check your bank statements for any unexpected charges and raise a chargeback with your bank if needed.

Cancel Early Without 3 Month Notice

Three situations allow you to cancel early without the standard notice period.

Fee Increase

If David Lloyd raises your membership fees you can cancel immediately. Submit your cancellation within 30 days of the fee increase notification and mention the fee increase in your email so it gets processed correctly.

Medical Grounds

You need a GP letter that clearly states you cannot use the gym for 2 or more consecutive months due to illness, injury, or disability.

Redundancy or Relocation

For redundancy you need a redundancy letter from your employer or a P45. For relocation you need proof of your new address like a utility bill or tenancy agreement showing you have moved too far from your club.

Submit your documents with your cancellation notice. Approval usually takes 5 to 10 business days and is not guaranteed.

If your request is denied, escalate to the Complaints Department with a full explanation.

Confirm Cancellation & Escalate If Ignored

David Lloyd should acknowledge your cancellation within 10 days. Save proof of submission right away.

  • Email: Request a read receipt and screenshot both the sent email and the receipt confirmation
  • Registered Post: Use Royal Mail Special Delivery and keep the tracking receipt
  • In Person: Ask staff to write a receipt with the date, time, and their name then photograph it immediately

Keep all proof for at least 3 months after your cancellation end date.

No Response Within 10 Days

Send a follow up email to both the Membership Department and Complaints Department referencing your original submission date and asking for written confirmation.

If still no response after 5 more business days escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service at 0800 023 1111.

The Ombudsman investigates for free and David Lloyd has 8 weeks to respond. You may receive compensation if they are found at fault.

Refunds & Final Billing Timeline

Billing stops at the end of your notice period, not on the day you submit. Membership fees already charged are not refundable. Only overpayments get refunded.

For example, if you submit notice on June 3 and your end date is July 3, your last charge is on July 3. If you overpaid, you should get a refund within 5 to 10 business days.

If no refund shows up after 10 business days contact the Membership Department. For any charges after your cancellation date raise a chargeback with your bank and provide your cancellation proof.

Freeze vs Cancel

Freezing pauses your membership for 1 to 6 months at around £10 to £20 a month. Canceling ends it permanently at no cost.

  • Choose freeze for temporary situations like injury, travel, or short term financial hardship
  • Choose cancel if you are done with the gym for good

Note that freezing does not reset your notice period. If you unfreeze and cancel later the standard 3-month notice still applies.

Contact your club to confirm freeze availability before assuming it is an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Get Charged for Cancelling Classes?

No. Cancelling individual classes incurs no fee if the class is not fully booked. If the class is fully booked, a cancellation notification is recorded but no charge applies. This is different from membership cancellation.

Can I Transfer My Membership to Someone Else?

No. David Lloyd memberships are personal and non-transferable. If someone else wants to join they need to sign up with their own contract.

Can I Cancel a Family or Joint Membership?

Each person on a joint or family membership holds a separate contract. Everyone must submit their own written cancellation notice individually. One person canceling does not cancel the others.
